Description

Experience why Medellin was named the most innovative city in the world with our private tour with an English-speaking guide.

Come on our tour and discover what makes Antioquia’s capital a city of innovation and why, in 2013, Medellín was recognized as “The World’s Most Innovative City of the Year”, beating New York and Tel Aviv. Have a look at impressive buildings, enjoy the cable car ride and get to experience some of the innovative social and urbanism strategies that have brought positive change.

After picking you up at your hotel we’ll start our tour near the Metro station Universidad, at the Parque de los Deseos, (Park of Wishes). Here, we’ll get a first impression of how building a place inviting people of all ages to relax and spend time together can improve the community’s spirit and appearance. Next, we’ll walk past the Metro station and arrive at the Botanical Garden where we’ll get a chance to admire Colombia’s huge variety of plants, especially inside the fascinating architecture award-winning Orchideorama with beautiful orchids, bromeliads, and fern.

Now, we are ready to board the Metro to the end of the line, and then hop onto the Metrocable. We will experience how easy it became to reach other parts of the city without having to drive through heavy traffic or having to walk for hours through narrow alleyways to reach a destination when there is no room for building streets. This created a stronger sense of belonging to the inhabitants of areas that once were marginalized. On the Metrocable, we will float above the houses until we reach the top station.
Once we get off, we will walk for a few blocks until we reach the Santo Domingo Library. This is part of another social initiative called Library Parks, that adds to the recovery of Medellin as a city.

There, we will have a magnificent view over Medellín before we learn about what the library has to offer. We will get to understand why projects, like providing access to computers as well as offering daycare for children with opportunities to do sports or arts, helped a lot to change the mentality of the inhabitants of marginalized areas and has brought new beneficial social dynamics.

Back on the Metrocable, we’ll ascend into the rural part of the system that stretches for miles into the mountains and continues to Arví Park. This line has worked as a strategic link between the rural area of Medellin but also makes a joy-ride through the beautiful fog forest. You will breathe in fresh air, be amazed by spectacular views of the vast mountains.

At the end of the line we’ll get off for a short coffee break and a local snack, and then we will return all the way back to the metro system. There, our guide will give you options to get back to your hotel by public metro or help you arrange a safe transport back to your hotel or the next stop in your itinerary.
